About ClueBy

ClueBy is a free daily word puzzle. Every day twelve real sentences each have a word missing, and they hide just four words between them.

Most words have more than one meaning, and each sentence uses a different one: “bark” on a tree and a dog that barks. The fun is spotting which sentences secretly share a word. Monday is the gentlest day and Saturday the trickiest.

How to play

Select three sentences you think are missing the same word, then press Submit.

If they match, the group is found and leaves the board. If not, it costs a mistake. “One away” means two of the three belong together.

You have three mistakes: the third ends the game. Stuck? The 💡 button shows the first letter of one sentence's word, for one mistake. Once three groups are found, the last one is solved for you.

Each group you find shows its word filled into the three sentences, with the meaning each one uses and a link to its source.

Tips

Think of other meanings

If a sentence makes no sense with the obvious word, the missing word is probably used in a different sense: a bank of a river, a bat in a cave.

Watch for decoys

Most boards are built around a theme, so some sentences seem to fit two groups. Start with the group you're surest about.

You don't need the word to sort

The words around the blank (an article, a verb, a preposition) can tell you two sentences belong together before you know the word.
